Named in part after Winona Ryder cult classic The Heathers and partly from a line in Kerouac’s “The Dharma Bums,” The New Heathers seemingly came out of nowhere with a smattering of dates and a cool indie single, “Agatha.” Truth is, The New Heathers is actually a side project for Tim Ferrell, Tim Convy and Matt Palermo, born of established indie rock band Ludo. They’re on the road to promote their new EP – The Fuel, The Fire, The Spark. As the frontman, Ferrell’s high-pitched vocals work well when conveying emotions and provide a nice counterpoint to the Heathers synth-heavy prog rock, which is laden with harmonies and purposeful guitar riffs. You can catch them for $10 at Macs Bar Oct. 21 with openers Meese, Haha Tonka and Without a Face. While Meese and Haha Tonka are both fine examples of indie rock, the acoustic act Without a Face is worth seeing for the cleverness of his lyrics and the passion with which they’re delivered.
