Feb. 11-12: The 4th Annual (SCENE) Metrospace Folk Festival |
Tim Lane, the director/curator at (SCENE) Metrospace, said art openings happen every six to eight weeks, but the venue stays busy with a plethora of other happenings four to six times per month.
"Recently the space has mainly hosted music shows, CD release parties and poetry slams, but we've also hosted a comedy night, a talk on collecting local art, and a modern dance recital," Lane said.
Concerts vary from indie rock and urban sounds, to alternative folk and the avant-garde. Some of these examples include the annual (SCENE) Metrospace Folk Festival, which, Lane says, "brings a great menu of local musicians together for two solid nights.
There is also the Scene & Heard Concert Series, which features classical and jazz instrumentation combined with video and computer generated sounds, and the space also schedules DJed events and Battles of the Beats, a hip-hop production competition.
When it comes to art, the gallery often offers more than just paintings on the wall. Lane said he strives to find stimulating pieces by local and regional up-and-coming artists, as well as established artists.
"The gallery features a diverse range of art - from traditional painting, sculptures and photography to mixed media, video, installation and conceptual," he said. "The exhibitions are usually created around a central theme. As curator, I look for work that's brave, taps into contemporary themes, provokes consideration and utilizes contemporary methods and materials."
(SCENE) Metrospace has regular gallery hours during exhibitions. The space is open Thursdays 2-5 p.m., Fridays and Saturdays from 2-6 p.m., and Sundays from noon- 4 p.m. The gallery re-opens in the evenings for scheduled events.
