Lemonheads-Evan-Dando

This month, Michigan has a surprising surplus of alternative-rock veterans swinging through the mitten state. Here are a few options for some throwback rock shows that are just a short road trip away from the Lansing area.

Bush with Filter
Orbit Room, Grand Rapids
Oct. 4, doors at 6:30 p.m. / $32.50 in advance. $38 day of show.
orbitroom.com, (616) 942-1328
In the years before he turned into Gwen Stefani's stay-at-home dad, Gavin Rossdale and his band Bush ruled MTV with post-grunge hits like "Everything Zen," "Machine Head" and the ballad "Glycerine." After an eight-year hiatus, Bush is back and touring the country.

The Lemonheads with The Shining Twins
Magic Stick, Detroit
Oct. 18, 8 p.m. / $15-$18
majesticdetroit.com/magic-stick, (313) 833-9700
The Lemonheads shot to college-rock fame with a poppy-punk rock cover of "Mrs. Robinson," the classic Simon & Garfunkel tune. While the band saw its peak in the ‘90s, and leader Evan Dando has battled some demons in recent years, he continues to steadily write, record and perform.

Primus
Michigan Theater, Ann Arbor
Oct. 11, 8 p.m. / $35
michtheater.org, (734) 668-8463
"Wynona's Big Brown Beaver" and "My Name is Mud" are two of the quirkiest tunes to come out of the Buzz Bin-era of rock music. The band recently recorded a long-awaited new album and hit the road to promote it.

Smashing Pumpkins
The Fillmore, Detroit
Oct. 15, 6 p.m. / $35 to $60
thefillmoredetroit.com, (313) 961-5450
At 44-years old, bald-headed sensation Billy Corgan shows no signs of letting his rat out of the cage. The Smashing Pumpkins are even getting set to release a new LP, Oceania, at the end of the year.

GWAR with Everytime I Die
Intersection, Grand Rapids
Oct. 26, 7 p.m. / $22 advance, $25 day of
sectionlive.com, (616) 451-3039
Obscene lyrics + horrific stage costumes + graphic stage presence = Gwar. Since 1984, this Richmond-based band has been scaring parents and spraying liquids onto audiences across the globe - all while in the guise of a larger-than-life sci-fi monster.
